Indians, Hawks Sweep Rivalry Doublheaders With Pioneers, Mavericks (High School Basketball RoundUp)

Lakes area rivals Spirit Lake and Okoboji met on the basketball court Saturday night in Milford for a non-conference girls and boys doubleheader, and in the end, the night would belong to the Indians. Sophomore KJ Veldman hit on 9-of-16 field goals attempts en route to 22 points in a 61-40 decision. Whitney Berkland pitched in with ten. Spirit Lake hit seven three-pointers in the contest. Okoboji was paced by Skylar Hansen’s nine points and Taylor Poppema’s eight. The win pushes the Indians to 8-3 on the year, while the Pioneers fall to 3-10.

In the nightcap the Spirit Lake boys used a 14-3 second quarter to pull away from Okoboji and grab a 45-22 road win. Mitch Peschon dropped in eleven points and Paul Brown had eight for the Indians. Brian Dubois notched seven points and had five blocked shots in the losing effort for Okoboji. The Indians improved to 5-7 overall, with the Pioneers’ record dropping to 1-11.

Two other area rivals met Saturday night as Clay Central-Everly traveled to Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn for a non-conference doubleheader that the Hawks would sweep. Holli Mohni and Onica Jacobs led a balanced attack with 14 and ten points, respectively, and the HMS girls won 39-28. Taylor Fahnlander’s ten points was tops for the Mavericks.

A 24-point effort by Greg Hegstad propelled the HMS boys to a 60-49 victory. Cody Leng also reached double figures with 16 points. CCE received 18 from Caleb Mackey and another ten by Nick Roghair.
