Trailing the Spencer Tigers by four after the first quarter, Spirit Lake went on to outscore their Lakes Conference rival by nine in the second quarter and never looked back in a 54-45 win. Cara Vale provided the spark with three three-pointers in the quarter. The junior finished with four makes from beyond the arc, while KJ Veldman hit three more. Veldman led all scorers with 20 points, to go along with seven steals, five rebounds. Alli Gerking scored ten second half points en route to 14 total points, five steals and five rebounds. And Vale rounded out the double-digit scoring with thirteen. The Tigers’ Ashley Williamson notched 14 points and eight rebounds, and Tiffany Martindale had thirteen. Spencer is now 1-3 on the season and 0-1 to start Lakes Conference play. Spirit Lake heads into Friday’s home contest with LeMars at 2-1 overall and 1-0 in league action. The Okoboji girls hit the road to battle West Lyon in a Siouxland Conference game, and suffered a 60-37 setback. Paisley Jones dropped in thirteen points to lead the Pioneers, who are now 2-3 overall and 1-3 in league play. Mikkinzie Peschong registered eight points. Up next Okoboji will host Sheldon on Friday.
