A back-and-forth basketball game ended in dramatic fashion Tuesday night as Storm Lake defeated Spirit Lake 43-40 on a banked in half-court heave by Tornadoes senior Michael McCabe. That game-winning shot came just seconds after Indians senior Mitch Peschon nailed a jumper along the baseline to tie the game at 40. Neither team led by more than five in the tightly played contest, that head coach Nate Loenser says was decided well before the thrilling conclusion. Sophomore Paul Brown led all scorers with 14, including a half-court buzzer-beater of his own to end the third quarter. Sawyer Harms finished with ten points. Spirit Lake now sits at 1-4 on the season and 1-2 in Lakes Conference play. They will host Cherokee on Friday, a game you can hear on KUOO Campus Radio.
A strong third quarter propelled Harris-Lake Park to a 56-49 win over Cornbelt Conference rival Clay Central-Everly last night. The Wolves outscored the Mavericks 21-6 behind some strong defense. Justin Murphy led HLP with 23 points as the Wolves improve to 5-1 overall and 3-1 on league play. They will travel to North Sentral Kossuth on Friday.
Graettinger-Terril secured another conference victory, 40-29 over Ruthven-Ayrshire. Beau Craig accounted for more than half the Knights points with 22. Three players led the Raiders with six.
