Indians Crush Wolves in Season Opener (Girls Basketball RoundUp)

Twenty-nine points separated the girls basketball teams from Spirit Lake and Harris-Lake Park after the season’s first eight minutes of play Monday night, in what ended up as an 80-30 victory for the Indians. Spirit Lake, playing in the high school’s old gym for the first time in five years, shot nearly 50-percent from the field, including 7-of-15 from outside the arc. All-State guard KJ Veldman finished with a game-high 25 points, including three 3-pointers. The junior also notched eight assists and six steals, both team highs. Seniors Cara vale and Whitney Berkland reached double-digits with eleven and ten points, respectively. The Indians collected 26 steals and forced the Wolves into 40 turnovers. HLP’s top scorer was sophomore post Noreen Morrow, who scored ten of her 14 points in the second half. Macy Gunderson knocked down two from distance to finish with six points. Harris-Lake Park will take another stab at win number one on November 28 at Southwest Star Concept in Minnesota. Spirit Lake will participate in the Waukon Holiday Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
