Indians and Tigers Win, Knights and Hawks Falter (Girls Basketball RoundUp)

Spirit Lake and Cherokee traded leads numerous times throughout the third quarter of their Lakes Conference matchup Tuesday night, however, the Indians would pull away for a 63-51 home win. The fourth quarter provided a 20-11 differential in scoring for Spirit Lake, who connected on nine 3-pointers. Four treys came from the accurate touch of Alissa Christoffer, who finished with 17 points. KJ Veldman paced all scorers with 20 points, as she connected on three triples. Spirit Lake also controlled the boards, grabbing thirteen more than the Braves, including 17 offensive rebounds. Megan Carlson and Shanon Schaefer were the top scorers for Cherokee, with thirteen and twelve points, respectively. The loss puts the Braves at 0-3 in the conference, opposite the 3-0 Indians, who are also 6-1 overall. No. 14 Spirit Lake heads to 11th-ranked Western Christian on Friday to battle the undefeated Wolfpack on KUOO Campus Radio.

Rivals Spencer and Emmetsburg needed more than regulation to decided their winner on Tuesday, and in overtime, the Tigers squeezed out a 42-39 Lakes Conference win. The teams combined to shoot 54 free throws, converting on 33 of them. Alexa Allen hit four 3-pointers en route to 15 points for Spencer, which improves to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in league play. Emmetsburg’s top scorer was Paige Naig with 16 points, all of it after halftime. The E-Hawks are also 4-2 on the year, and now 1-2 in the Lakes Conference. They travel to Storm Lake on Friday, a game to be aired on Y100.

One night after holding NSK/AR scoreless for an entire half, second-ranked Estherville-Lincoln Central limited winless Storm Lake to single digits for the whole game in a 66-5 victory. The Midgets are 8-0 to start the season. Also in the Lakes, Western Christian tallied a 69-52 defeat of Le Mars.

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn put their four-game winning streak on the line Tuesday against undefeated Hinton in the War Eagle Conference, however, the Hawks couldn’t find enough fire power in taking a 64-32 loss. HMS is now 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference. They play again Friday at sixth-ranked LeMars Gehlen Catholic. The Jays upended South O’Brien 68-42 to keep a perfect record at 6-0. The Wolverines are 3-5 overall.

Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire hosted Ventura in a Cornbelt Conference game, however, the Knights would come out on the losing end, 54-31. Alesha Sikora finished with a team-high nine points for GT/RA, which falls to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in league contests.

The Siouxland Conference slate saw Boyden-Hull take down West Lyon by twenty, 49-29. Undefeated MOC-Floyd Valley blew out George-Little Rock, 52-15. Sheldon and Rock Valley went to overtime before the Orabs registered a road win, 55-52. and Sibley-Ocheyedan dropped a 66-41 contest at Sioux Center.

In other girls basketball games, Sioux Central had little trouble with Storm Lake St. Mary’s, earning a 53-38 win.

North of the border, Worthington handed Jackson County Central its second loss of the year and first in conference with a 79-49 decision. Fairmont dominated Windom, 61-37. Southwest Star Concept provided little residence for Southwest Minnesota Christian in a 79-35 setback.
