A high number of Iowa Lakes Community College athletes are being honored for their success on the field and in the classroom. Four student-athletes will receive Distinguished Academic All-American Honors from the National Junior College Athletic Association for maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.8. They were golfers Anthony Appel, Lauren Hartman, and Jarvis Weber, as well as Ashley Heiberger of the softball team. Three others, golfer Scott Benson, soccer player Willy Kappie, and cross country runner Bart Zimmer were named Academic All-Americans for holding a grade point average between 3.6 and 3.79. Fourteen Lakers were also named to the Academic All-Region First Team by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference, and 16 more found themselves on the second team. As a team, the men’s and women’s golf squads had top-20 GPAs nationally. The women finished tenth with a 3.12 mark, while the men were 17th at 3.06.
