It didn’t take long for Iowa State to find its next head men’s basketball coach. ISU has hired former Cyclones star Fred Hoiberg as its new basketball coach. Hoiberg was a prep standout in Ames who went on to play 10 seasons in the NBA and has been serving as the Minnesota Timberwolves’ vice president of basketball operations. He will be introduced as the 19th head coach in program history at a press conference in Ames this morning.
Former Iowa State basketball coach Greg McDermott says everything is in place for Creighton to play for a Missouri Valley Conference championship right away and become a mid-major power. McDermott was introduced as Creigton’s new head coach on Tuesday and is taking over for Dana Altman, who became Oregon’s coach.
Northern Iowa Athletic Director Troy Dannen has announced that in-coming freshman Doug McDermott has been granted a release from his national letter of intent to play for the Panthers next season. McDermott, the son of now former Iowa State head coach Greg McDermott, will follow his father to Creighton for the 2010-2011 season.
