Hockey Takes Center Ice at Free Event Saturday

A nationwide effort to promote the sport of hockey is coming to the Iowa Great Lakes this weekend. The Lakes Area Hockey Association and the Boji Blizzard will host a “Try Hockey for Free” event on the outdoor rink just north of the Bedell Y on Saturday, February 18. It is part of USA Hockey’s “Hockey Weekend Across America Celebration” that spans Friday through Saturday. Locally, the LAHA is providing numerous resources to entice potential skaters, both young and old, to attend, according to board member Brett Hetland.

Hetland knows this winter has not been very beneficial to promote the game of hockey in northwest Iowa. The LAHA does plan to hold the event indoors at the Spirit Lake Middle School gymnasium if the rink lacks ice this weekend. But despite the poor weather conditions, Hetland expresses his pleasure in the growing number of kids joining teams created by the Lakes Area Hockey Association.

A key factor in the growth of hockey in Dickinson County is the future enclosing of the outdoor rink, along with the construction of locker room and spectator facilities. Hetland provides an update on that project.
