HLP Stays Perfect as Wolves Sweep CCE (Basketball RoundUp)

The 2011 calendar will end on a high note for the basketball teams of Harris-Lake Park following the Wolves doubleheader sweep of Clay Central-Everly on Tuesday. Eli Ihnen connected on thirteen field goals, including four from beyond the arc, to score 34 points in a 74-54 road win for the boys. Tanner Hiveley finished with 19 points and Brady Nissen notched 15 points. HLP, which is ranked No. 8 in Class 1A, will enter 2012 with a perfect 8-0 record overall and 4-0 in the Cornbelt Conference. The Mavericks were led by Tyler Schuck’s 17 points and Jared Schoelerman’s 15 points as they fall to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the league.

The girls matchup between the Wolves and Mavericks also went in favor of the visitors from Harris-Lake Park in a 45-28 decision over CCE. Macy Gunderson had the hot hand from outside, hitting five 3-pointers en route to a career-high 19 points. Mariah Gath used three shots from distance to help reach 15 points, and Noreen Morrow tallied eleven points. Heather Busch scored over 50-percent of the Mavericks’ points, dropping in 16. Clay Central-Everly has an overall record of 2-6, while falling to 1-4 in the Cornbelt. HLP sits at an even 4-4 on the season, but boasts a 3-1 mark in the conference.

Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire ventured outside the Cornbelt Conference to take on Trinity Christian, but the boys suffered a 56-49 loss Tuesday night. GT/RA drops to 1-6 for the year.

In other boys basketball from Tuesday, Unity Christian upended Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn by a 66-51 margin. The Hawks are an even 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the War Eagle Conference. South O’Brien notched a league win, taking down Remsen-Union, 70-46.

The Siouxland schedule resulted in Central Lyon defeating Sibley-Ocheyedan, 63-44. West Lyon was ten points better than George-Little Rock, 67-57. And MOC-Floyd Valley remains atop the league standings with a one-sided 91-62 victory at Rock Valley.

A top-ten showdown in Northwest Iowa needed overtime to settle the score, as fifth-ranked Bishop Heelan won at seventh-ranked LeMars, 59-56.

North of the border, Marshall pounded out a 95-57 road win over Jackson County Central.

The girls basketball schedule from Tuesday featured a tight game between Unity Christian and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, though in the end the Knights crept past the Hawks, 43-41. HMS falls to 2-3 in the War Eagle Conference and 5-4 overall. South O’Brien picked up a league victory, taking down Remsen-Union, 68-47.

Over in the Siouxland, George-Little Rock dismantled West Lyon, 73-38. MOC-Floyd Valley pulled away from Rock Valley, 82-47. And Central Lyon earned a twenty-point win over visiting Sibley-Ocheyedan, 66-46.

A pair of Lakes Conference teams in action, Western Christian destroyed Sioux City North by a final of 83-35, and Bishop Heelan had no trouble with LeMars in a 77-50 ballgame.

Up in Minnesota, Marshall proved to be better than Jackson County Central, winning on the Huskies home floor, 56-45, and in overtime, Martin County West pulled out a 60-56 victory against Fairmont.
