Highlights Abound at Iowa Great Lakes Invite (Track & Field RoundUp)

The Iowa Great Lakes Invitational held at Sheryl Maas Track in Spirit Lake on Tuesday proved to be a very competitive boys’ only track and field competition. The team title went to Algona, who racked up 141.5 points, surpassing second place Okoboji at 127.5 points. Spencer finished third (107), Storm Lake fourth (103), Spirit Lake Park fifth (94), Estherville-Lincoln Central sixth (59.5), and Emmetsburg seventh (50.5). SLP finished with five first place times, all of which are ranked as top five times Class 3A. Will Norris broke the tape in the 1600-meters at 4:27.36, and Kevin Martinson won the 400-meter hurdles in 55.56. The Indians also were tops in the Medley relay (Luke Kabele, Bryson McCabe, Kayne Feldick, Keith Byers) at 3:35.60, the 4×400 relay (Kabele, Aric Waltz, Feldick, Martinson) in 3:27.14, and the 4×800 (Martinson, Norris, Feldick, Byers), which ran the fastest time in Class 3A this year at 8:02.90.

The Pioneers also set some benchmark times. Okoboji won the Shuttle Hurdle relay (Alex Koepp, Chris Albright, Dalton Syverson, Zach Jones) in 1:00.46, the third best time in Class 2A. On the individual side, Zach Jones brought home the gold in the 110-meter hurdles (15.51), and Alex Koepp provided the top mark in the long jump at 20’4.25″.

Estherville-Lincoln Central returned home with a pair of wins. Alex Blomquist was tops in the 400-meter dash (52.52), and Gable Bonner chucked the farthest shot put, a distance of 46’8″.
