It came down to the final seconds Friday night in Sheldon as the Spirit Lake Indians dropped to 0-2 in district play with a 28-21 loss to the Orabs. Cody Poock scored the second of his two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter, then hauled in the two-point conversion as Spirit Lake rallied to tie the game at 21. But a fumble by the Indians would set up the Orabs for the game’s final score, as Chris Balster kept it from one-yard out for winning touchdown. Mitch Peschon completed 15 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown. Poock finished with 22 yards rushing and 93 receiving with two scores. Sheldon tallied 217 of their 338 yards on the ground, with Michael Lovan scoring twice on 84 yards rushing. The Indians, now 2-2 overall, will host Central Lyon/George-Little Rock for homecoming next Friday.
Other Class 2A, District 1 scores include Okoboji narrowly falling at Unity Christian 15-14, Central Lyon/George-Little Rock shutout Estherville-Lincoln Central 31-0, and Western Christian snuck past Sioux Center 8-6.
The Harris-Lake Park Wolves celebrated homecoming in style with a 58-24 dismantling of Corwith-Wesley-Luverne. HLP got off to a quick start, scoring three times in the first half off of Panthers turnovers. Jacob Ihnen had two touchdowns to lead the Wolves, while Mychel Sheridan also had a solid offensive effort in finding the end zone. HLP travels to North Sentral Kossuth in week five.
Also in 8-man football, Armstrong-Ringsted beat North Sentral Kossuth 53-13 and Graettinger-Terril topped Ruthven-Ayrshire 55-12.
Emmetsburg pushed their regular season consecutive win streak to 23 games with a 48-13 drubbing of Pocahontas. All 483 of the EHawks total yards came on the ground, with Brady Berkland running for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Cory Schultes also crossed the goalline twice. Emmetsburg is now 4-0 and hosts South O’Brien for homecoming next week.
In other football action, Spencer was blanked 14-0 by LeMars, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn dominated Alta-Aurelia 44-7, and Sibley-Ocheyedan earned a 29-18 win over Sioux Central.
North of the border, Jackson County Central fell 10-9 to Luverne, Martin County West also lost by a point, 7-6, to New Richland, and the same story played out for Fairmont in a 21-20 setback to St. Paul Central.
