Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Splits With Emmetsburg

GIRLS

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, having lost seven of its last eight contests, got a visit from an Emmetsburg Lady E’Hawk club which had lost six in a row. But Emmetsburg, despite its 1-7 record, went toe to toe with HMS and snatched a two-point halftime lead. That’s when Hartley took control, scoring 14 of the first 16 points out of the gate in the second half. And when Emmetsburg chipped an 11-point lead down to four, HMS snapped off a 15-0 run en route to a 52-32 win. The 32 points allowed by HMS was its second-best offensive effort of the season. Eight different players scored for the Hawks who were led by Onica Jacobs. The junior put down 10 of her 14 in the second half while Hailey Waechter put home 10, eight in the second stanza. Aubrie Rozeboom scored 10 first half points, but got into foul trouble in the second half. That’s when Waechter and Jacobs turned it up. The Hawks (4-7) also held Emmetsburg’s 6-foot sophomore Paige Naig, a double-figure scorer, to just six points.

BOYS

Looking to snap a four-game losing streak, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Hawks invited Emmetsburg into the HMS Events Center, and what looked like it could have become a blowout was made quite interesting by a Hawk team that blasted a big run in the fourth quarter. Down 14 with 7 minutes left, HMS used a 16-6 run over five minutes to cut the lead to four. However, the Hawks couldn’t get over the hump as the E’Hawks downed HMS 50-43. It was Hartley’s third straight loss by single digits.

Emmetsburg shot 21 more free throws than HMS, going +8 at the foul stripe. Ryan Kleigl put in 16 to lead all scorers for Emmetsburg. Justin Wohlert scored 14 to lead the Hawks, Marcus Treimer added 13 and Cody Leng chipped in 11 for HMS (3-8).
