ELC Bows Out in Quarterfinals of Class 2A (Girls State Basketball RoundUp)

Lakes Conference co-champions Western Christian and Estherville-Lincoln Central were tied at 45 in the girls Class 2A State Quarterfinals until Kim Kroeze dropped in a putback with less than five seconds remaining, handing the rubber match to the Wolfpack, 47-45. The sixth-ranked Midgets led by as much as ten in the fourth quarter, however, Western Christian put together a 14-3 run to take the lead in the final two minutes. Senior Alyssa Johnson paced ELC with thirteen points. Allie Sievert completed a double-double of twelve points, eleven rebounds. The Midgets, who finished runners-up in last year’s state tourney, end the season at 24-3. The Wolfpack had two players with a dozen points, Alissa Pollema and Jamie Gesink. The win marks the tenth straight for Western Christian and, at 23-3, pushes them into the state semifinals against defending champion and undefeated OA-BCIG on Thursday at noon.
