The Emmetsburg softball team ended their record-setting 2012
season in dramatic style Wednesday, winning the Class 2A Consolation Runner-up
game in a walkoff, 2-1, over Wayne in Ft. Dodge.
The E-Hawks, who lost their consolation semifinal to Denver
by a 4-1 final earlier in the day, entered the bottom of the seventh versus Wayne tied at one. Senior
Faith Schmidt led off with a bloop single to left, and courtesy runner Alexa
Naig reached second on a groundout. Down to their final out, freshman Michaela
Rehm drove in the game-winning run with a single to center. Rehm finished the
state tournament with a team-high four hits. Schmidt picked up the win in
relief of Ashton Connelly, who allowed one unearned run on three hits in four
innings of work. Schmidt caps the season with 29 victories in the circle, and a
Class 2A high 322 strikeouts. Emmetsburg ends the season with a school record
33 wins and eleven losses, finishing seventh in the state.
