Taking on the two-time defending champions in Class 1A,
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn was only able to muster a single hit in taking a 9-0
loss to the top-rated Westerners. Kori Boll led off the seventh inning with a
single, however, the Hawks were unable to advance her on the base paths. The
win marks Akron-Westfield’s 45th consecutive, a streak dating back
to last season. HMS is 4-8 in War Eagle play and 7-9 overall. They will
participate in a weekend tournament in Akron
today.
Two area teams were ready to do battle Friday as Okoboji hit
the road for a showdown with sixth-ranked Estherville-Lincoln Central. The
Midgets jumped out early, taking a 3-0 lead after two innings. However, the
action would stop there as lightning and rain cancelled the remainder of the game.
ELC will now put their 14-4 record on the line Monday against Cherokee in the
Lakes Conference home game. Okoboji, at 8-10, returns to Siouxland Conference
play Monday at West Lyon.
Emmetsburg and North Union
both began play Friday at the Ft. Dodge Invitational Tournament. The
ninth-ranked E-Hawks went 1-1, picking up a 4-0 win over Colfax-Mingo, before
falling 8-4 against eighth-ranked Winterset. That loss snapped a nine-game win
streak, and puts Emmetsburg at 16-5. North Union
also earned a win and took a loss. The setback, the Warriors first of the
season, was a 7-1 final to Dowling Catholic of West Des Moines, snapping a 19-game streak to
start the year. The victory came against Webster City,
with a final tally of 5-3. Both Emmetsburg and North Union will play again
today in Ft. Dodge.
