The
annual running of the Sheryl Maas Relays in Spirit Lake Tuesday night may have
been a preview of the drama that could unfold at next week’s District meet. The
Spirit Lake Park
and Algona girls’ track and field teams were locked in a tight battle
throughout, with the Bulldogs narrowly pulling out a team title with 161
points. The Indians were second with 153, claiming nine first-place finishes
and setting 14 personal bests. Estherville-Lincoln Central took third with 43
points and Emmetsburg tallied 28 points for fourth. SLP had a pair of two-time
winners in Jenna McCoy, taking first in the high jump (5’0”) and long jump
(16’8”), and Taylor Sieperda, who broke the tape in the 200-meter (27.59) and
400-meter dashes (60.74). Mikey Heikens claimed the 800-meters (2:34.38), Dondi
Schmidt set the pace in the 3000-meters (11:58.78), and Kendra Stokke was tops
in the 400-meter hurdles (69.96). The Indians also crossed the finish line
first in the 4×200 (Julie Sjuve, Stokke, Bailey Loveall, Miranda Brueggeman;
1:51.48) and 4×400 relays (Emma Dau, Loveall, Caitlin Eckerman, Sjuve;
4:21.19).
