In Class 3A girls postseason basketball, the Spirit Lake Indians are one win away from state by beating Sioux Center on Wednesday night 59-56. It was a slow start to the ball game as it was only 7-6 Spirit Lake after the 1st quarter. Spirit Lake’s shot finally starting falling in the 2nd and they pulled ahead by 7 at half. The Indians would maintain that lead in the 3rd and go into the 4th up by 6. In the fourth quarter, Sioux Center had a game plan of extending the ball game for as long as they could and starting fouling at around the 5 minute mark. Spirit Lake would get to the free throw line 30 times in the 4th quarter alone and make 20, just enough to hold on for the win. For the game Spirit Lake made 27 of 40 attempts from the line which is 68%.
Spirit Lake was led by KJ Veldman with 22 points. She was perfect from the line in the 4th qtr hitting all 12 attempts. 13 of her 22 points came at the stripe. Sioux Center was led by Jillian Estes with a game high 26 points. The Warriors season comes to close at 15 wins and 8 losses.
Spirit Lake is now 15-8 and will play in a Class 3A Region 2 final in Algona on Saturday against Garner Hayfield Ventura who beat Osage 49-35. The game can be heard on KUOO and online at exploreokoboji.com Saturday at 6:45 PM with the pregame.
Also in 3A, Estherville Lincoln Central is one win away from state as they beat Hampton Dumont 53-32 and next up for ELC is Nevada as they downed Iowa Falls Alden 44-40. The regional final for the midgets will be Saturday in Humboldt at 7 PM
In Class 4A girls basketball, Humboldt beat Webster City 42-29 and will now play at Spencer on Saturday and it was Lemars beating Storm Lake 57-30 and will be at Sioux City Heelan on Saturday night.
