“One-sided” is the best word to describe this year’s 40th
Annual Iowa Shrine Bowl, as the South All-Stars easily defeated the North,
40-7, at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.
The lone score for the North came from former Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley standout,
Nathan Alexander, who caught a three-yard touchdown pass early in the game to
make it 10-7. The South went on to score 30 unanswered points. Andrew Broocks, a recent graduate of Spirit Lake, led the North defensively with nine tackles, seven solo and 0.5 for loss. The all-state defensive lineman will play football
this fall at Morningside. The rest of the North roster also included Andrew Garrelts of Emmetsburg, Dakota Odermann of
Armstrong-Ringsted, Matt Nagel from Central Lyon/George-Little Rock, and Adam
Teunissen of West Lyon.
Following this year’s contest, it was announced that the 41st
edition of the Iowa Shrine Bowl will be played next summer at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, ending a
twelve-year run at Jack Trice. The Iowa Shrine Bowl has worked out a new deal
with the University
of Northern Iowa and the
Cedar Valley Sports Commission to relocate the annual all-star game, which will
be played on July 27, 2013. The Iowa Shrine Bowl features 92 football all-stars
and 60 cheerleaders and is a major fundraiser for the Shriners Children’s
Hospital.
