Bergquist/Stoll Finish 6th at State Tennis

Spirit Lake-Okoboji tennis players Wes Bergquist and Brandon
Stoll began day two of the Class 1A Boys State Tennis Tournament in the
semifinals of the doubles consolation bracket. The senior-junior tandem used a
commanding 6-3, 6-0 win over Red Oak’s Jordan Nelson and Craig White to advance
to the finals and the right to play for fifth place. That final match against
the team of Gabe Vandenberg and Dan Williams from Keokuk came down to a third
set tiebreaker, as SL-O fell 3-6, 6-3, 1(2). Berguist and Stoll end the year
with a sixth place finish and a record of 20-5.

The singles tournament in Class 1A saw Spencer’s Michael
Gabhart take two setbacks on the second day of competition to finish eighth
overall. The junior dropped his first match in the consolation semifinals
against Sam Arsanjani of Fairfield Maharishi in a 6-2, 4-6, 1(4) tiebreaker.
Gabhart then lost in the seventh-place game 6-2, 6-3 to Andy Mong of Northern
University High.
