Several area track and field teams made the trek to the University of South Dakota yesterday (Wednesday) for the Dan Lennon Indoor Meet, and plenty of hardware made its way back to northwest Iowa. Okoboji’s Zach Jones grabbed top honors in the boys 60 meter hurdles (8.64), just edging out Clay Central-Everly’s Jared Schoelerman (8.73). Tomas Weishun from Sibley-Ocheyedan took fifth (9.22). In the 60 meter dash, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s Justin Wohlert finished third (7.26). In the 400 meter dash, Schoelerman from CCE and Steven Brockshus of Sibley-Ocheyedan were eighth (55.69) and ninth (56.31), respectively. Ben Berberich of Clay Central-Everly ran to the silver medal in the 3200 (10:38.76), while Okoboji’s Joe Hilsabeck took eighth (10:55.93). Berberich also took sixth in the 1600 meter run (5:01.02).In the relays, Okoboji’s Alex Koepp, Zach Jones, Brian Dubois, and Dalton Syverson combined for a fifth place time in the 4×200 (1:39.85). Sibley-Ocheyedan’s 4×400 relay placed seventh. And in the field events, a pair of Pioneers were in the top ten of the high jump. Dubois jumped an even 6’0” to tie for third, while Syverson’s jump of 5’10” tied him for seventh. The long jump competition saw HMS’s Justin Wohlert grab gold at 20’10”. Brent Trierweiler of CCE (18’11.75”) and Okoboji’s Alex Koepp (18’11”) were eighth and ninth, respectively. And finally, Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Grant Greenfield took eighth in shot put (44’).
On to the girls competition, where Taylor Poppema from Okoboji was fifth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.98), and Sarah Ney from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn finished third in the 60 meter dash (8.18). In the 800 meter run, Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Leah Seivert took first at 2:24.22 and Brenna Sweeney of HMS was eighth (2:39.65). The 1600 meter run saw Seivert again grab top honors with a time of 5:28.98, with Okoboji’s Clare Eckard finishing eighth (6:01.63) and Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Jordan Truckenmiller right behind in ninth (6:03.98). Katie Knoblock of HMS (12:57.49) and Amy Dreessen of S-O (13:08.03) were ninth and ten, respectively, in the 3200 meter run. On to the relays, where Okoboji’s 4×200 team of Jordan Duncan, Skylar Hansen, Bryanna Wittrock, and Taylor Poppema notched a fourth place finish (1:56.01) and Sibley-Ocheyedan ran to a sixth place time (1:57.15). S-O also grabbed a top-ten spot in the 4×400, finishing ninth (4:36.01). The Distance Medley Relay for the Pioneers ended their race in seventh (4:44.37), which included Hansen, Wittrock, Poppema, and Eckard. However, the event was won by Sibley-Ocheyedan in 4:25.78. And in the field events, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn senior Onica Jacobs took fourth in the shot put (35’9.25”) and Clay Central-Everly’s Taylor Fahnlander was tied for ninth in the long jump (15’0.5”).
