Two Lakes Conference rivals hit the finish line neck-and-neck at the ELC Relays on Friday. The girls’ only track and field meet ended with Spirit Lake Park and Spencer tied atop the team standings with 163 points each. The hometown Midgets finished in third with 111 points, followed by Forest City in fourth (88), and Storm Lake fifth (49). The Indians won eight events and set two new meet records. Taylor Sieperda broke a 32-year old record by winning the 200-meter dash in 26.67, while Jenna McCoy set a new standard in the long jump with a leap of 16’8″. McCoy also took home the top high jump at 4’10”. Other individual winners include Kendra Stokke in the 400-meter hurdles (70.97), Mikey Heikens in the 800-meter run (2:34.15), and Dondi Schmidt setting the pace in the 1500-meter run (5:13.07). SLP also broke the tape first in two relays, with the 4×200 team (Julie Sjuve, Stokke, Bailey Loveall, Miranda Brueggeman; 1:51.91) and the Sprint Medley team (Abbey Horsman, Loveall, Brueggeman, Sieperda; 1:56.03) tallying wins.
Several area boys teams competed at the Tom Elliot Relays in Armstrong, hosted by North Union. Forest City dominated the competition, and registered a meet-high 156 points. Okoboji followed in second with 112 points. In third was the Spirit Lake Park JV at 80 points, the Estherville-Lincoln Central in fourth (73), North Iowa fifth (70), North Union sixth (54), Forest City JV seventh (11), and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire eighth (1). The Pioneers were first in seven events. Zach Jones won the 400-meter dash (52.55), Jordan Hanna dominated the 800-meter run (2:05.50), and Joe Hilsabeck won the 3200-meters (10:35.29). In the field events, Dalton Syverson stood atop the medal stand for the high jump (6’2″) and Jacob Sauter did the same in the shot put (47′). Okoboji also won two relays, the 4×400 (Mark Nielsen, Taylor Cody, Chris Albright, Jones; 3:34.86) and the Shuttle Hurdle (Keaton Jones, Albright, Syverson, Jones; 1:02.55). The SLP JV grabbed two victories, with Austin Folsom winning the 100-meter dash (11.85) and Kyle Anderson the 1600-meters (4:49.60)
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn hosted its annual Hawk Relays on Friday, a co-ed track and field meet. On the girls’ side, Sibley-Ocheyedan was the top team with 126 points. Second-place belonged to Okoboji at 110 points, HMS was third (104), followed by South O’Brien in fourth (90), George-Little Rock fifth (66), Remsen St. Mary’s sixth (26), Spalding Catholic seventh (23), Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire and Clay Central-Everly tied for eighth (11), and Akron-Westfield was tenth (8). The Pioneers won a pair of relays, with the 4×800 (10:45.48) and Shuttle Hurdle (1:18.21) teams breaking the tape. The Hawks were led by a pair of field event victories, as Taylor Pritchard won the long jump (12’11”) and Megan Kroese won the high jump. GT/RA was first in the Medley Relay (5:15.69).
In the boys competition, South O’Brien topped the points standings with 144, followed by Sheldon in second (94), Sibley-Ocheyedan third (90), Clay Central-Everly fourth (82), George-Little Rock fifth (63), Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn sixth (32), Akron-Westfield seventh (27), Spalding Catholic eighth (17), and Remsen St. Mary’s ninth (8). HMS earned first place honors in the shot put by Brett Waechter (39’3″), the high jump by Trenton Schirmer, and the 200-meter dash by Logan Remmers (27.65).
