Golf at Spirit Lake continues to fly high with the postseason nearing. The boys team fired a 155 team score to defeat Spencer (166) and LeMars (169) in a Lakes Conference triangular at Brooks National on Tuesday. Scott Hummel shot an impressive 35 to be meet medalist and teammate Matt Weeks was runner-up with a 36. The Indians other two counted scores were a 41 by Corey Potter and Trevor Caldwell’s 43. The Tigers were led by John Labernik’s 38.
Numerous area teams participated in the ten-team invitational hosted by Sibley-Ocheyedan in girls golf. Spirit Lake and Okoboji would finish first and second, respectively, with the Indians carding a 183 team score and the Pioneers with a 202. Estherville-Lincoln Central was fourth (209), and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn finished seventh (227), beating the Generals (227) on a fifth-score tiebreaker. The Indians’ Leah Hilpipre earned medalist honors with a 41. Okoboji’s Kiley Wermersen and Kristina Kaiser tied for second with matching 44’s and Maureen Owens of Spirit Lake was fourth with a round of 46. Other counted scores for the Indians were Emily Ayers and Whitney Berkland with matching 48’s, putting both in the top ten individually. Okoboji received a 50 from Hannah Jones and a 64 by Halee Morrow.
The boys Siouxland Conference tour meet made its way to Boyden-Hull and the result has shaken up the conference standings. MOC-Floyd Valley won the meet with a 160 total and appear to have locked up the conference title. Rock Valley was second (164), Sibley-Ocheyedan third (166), and Okoboji came in sixth (171). The Pioneers were led by a pair of 40’s from James Halbur and Tyler Ohl, a 44 by Tanner Taylor, and Dalton Poppema’s 47. Meet medalist was Sioux Center’s Rees Beaver with a 36. Okoboji drops to fourth place in the overall standings, two points behind the Generals and three behind Rock Valley.
Over in the Cornbelt, Harris-Lake Park and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire took to the links at Hillcrest just one day after the conference meet. The Wolves would sweep the dual, winning the boys competition 167-183. Nathan Kyle’s 38 for HLP was tops and earned him medalist honors. Teammate Austin Jacobsen matched G-T/R-A’s Blaze Alesch with a 41 for runner-up. The Wolves also counted Jacob Ihnen’s 44 and 48 by Eli Ihnen. The Knights recorded 45’s from Dylan Smith and Zach Harris, and a 52 by Dylan Fischer. The girls of HLP took a much closer win, 222-227. Sam Brueggeman paced the Lady Wolves as the medalist with a 49, to go along with Macy Gunderson’s 56, Rachel Vellema’s round of 58 and a 59 by Mariah Gath. G-T/R-A’s Kayla Dyer shot a 55 to finish runner-up. Caroline Koekenhoff notched a 56, Kelly Harris a 59 and Kendra Feldman finished with a 63.
