Spirit Lake celebrated Homecoming in style with a convincing 31-14 win over Central Lyon/George-Little Rock on Friday night. The Indians outgained the Lions on the ground 234 to 72, marking the fourth time in five games the Spirit Lake defense has held its opponent to less than 100 yards rushing. Cody Poock found the end zone three times for the Indians and accounted for 238 total yards of offense. Luke Kabele scored on a 60-yard touchdown pass from Mitch Peschon and also ran for 99 yards. Spirit Lake is now 3-2 overall and 1-2 in district play awith a major showdown at Okobji set for next week.
Speaking of the Pioneers, the hit the road to take on Estherville-Lincoln Central, who was also celebrating Homecoming this week, and the Midgets took care of business with a 34-3 win. Estherville is now 2-3 on the year and 1-2 in the league, while Okoboji remains winless at 0-3 in the district and 0-5 overall. The Pioneers host Spirit Lake for Homecoming next week, a game that will be aired live on KUOO and live on ExploreOkoboji.com.
Other scores from Class 2A, Western Christian remains undefeated with a 38-21 win over Unity Christian, and Sioux Center escaped with a narrow 13-12 win over Sheldon.
In Class 1A, Emmetsburg won for the 24th consecutive time in the regular season, taking their Homecoming game 41-6 over South O’Brien. Sophomore Andrew Wellik ran the show to the tune of 220 yards and four scores as the EHawks outgained the Wolverines 483 to 158. Third-ranked Emmetsburg is 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the district, with a major tilt ahead next week at West Lyon, who defeated Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 20-17. The Hawks fall from the ranks of the unbeaten and are now 4-1 this season and 2-1 in district play. Other Class 1A scores, Sibley-Ocheyedan secured their fourth win overall and second in the district with a 31-28 decision over Pocahontas, and Alta-Aurelia took down Sioux Central 14-8.
A major battle last night in 8-man football between two top-ten teams Armstrong-Ringsted and Graettinger-Terril. In the end it was the defending champion Mustangs on top 40-12 over the Knights to remain undefeated. Also, Harris-Lake Park dropped a road contest to North Sentral Kossuth 63-29, Clay Central Everly fell to Woodbury Central 24-15, Newell Fonda defeated Laurens-Marathon 47-20, and West Bend-Mallard dominated Ruthven-Ayrshire 52-0.
North of the border, Jackson County Central stayed perfect with a 27-17 victory over Marshall, Fairmont took down New Ulm 27-12, and Martin County West came out on the losing end 20-8 against United South Central.
