Both the Spirit Lake baseball and softball teams participated in tournaments at Sheldon over the weekend. The Lady Indians went 3-1 in the two-day event, splitting their final two games on Saturday. Cara Vale shutdown the Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley bats in a 4-0 shutout win before host Sheldon snuck past Spirit Lake 8-5 in extras in game two. The Indians are now 7-4 on the season and host Cherokee tonight.
The baseball Indians experienced a little less success on Saturday. They dropped a close game one to Sheldon 9-6 even after scoring three runs in the opening inning. Tyler Dean took the loss despite trying to help his own cause with two RBI at the plate. Spirit Lake then had no answer for Sergeant Bluff pitcher Josh Peterson, as the Indians were no-hit in a 15-0 five inning loss. They will look to rebound tonight when Cherokee comes to town for a Lakes conference showdown that you can hear on Campus Radio KUOO. The coverage begins around 7:15 with the pregame show.
Okoboji softball went 1-2 over the weekend at the Huxley tournament. The Pioneers opened with a 10-3 setback to Ballard, but rebounded to defeat Griswold 12-4 behind an 11 strikeout performance from Keely Bracelin. However, Okoboji dropped their final game 9-1 against Woodbury Central. They now sit at 7-4 overall.
In other action around the area, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn took part in the Clay Central-Everly baseball tournament. The Hawks lost to the host Mavericks 6-1, but rebounded to beat Ruthven-Ayshire/Graettinger-Terril by a 10-1 final. At the Spencer baseball tourney, the host Tigers and North Sentral Kossuth each won their first games, setting up a showdown in the championship, which was won by NSK 4-3.
