There was much to celebrate in Spencer Wednesday evening after a pair of walk off wins over Spirit Lake in both baseball and softball. Spirit Lake used a six run second inning in the baseball game to jump out in front; however, Alex Wethor had a flair for the dramatic. The senior crushed a three-run homer to pull within one at 10-9 in the sixth inning, then, with the game tied and the bases loaded in the seventh, ripped an RBI single to left for a 12-11 win. Wethor finished with five runs driven in, three scored on 4-of-5 hitting. The Indians had all nine batters in the lineup score at least once. Nik Erickson went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI. Spirit Lake falls to 1-3 in conference. They will battle county rival Okoboji this evening, a contest you can hear on Campus Radio KUOO. Pregame will begin at approximately 7:15, with a first pitch at 7:30. Spencer will host North Sentral Kossuth, which can be heard on our sister station Y100.
The softball game between Spencer and Spirit Lake needed extra innings to determine a winner. The Indians jumped out to a 3-0 lead early, but the Tigers scored four unanswered, the last of which coming in the bottom of the eighth for another walk off win. Spirit Lake is now 9-6 on the season and will travel to LeMars tonight.
In other action, Clay Central-Everly no-hit Harris-Lake Park in boys baseball, as part of a 13-0 win in five innings. On the flip side, the Lady Wolves got off the schneid with an 11-5 win over CCE, their first W of the season. Lydia Brandt went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Jena Peters struck out 12 en route to the win. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn fell 9-0 to Remsen St. Mary’s, Graettinger-Terril took a lopsided 13-1 decision in six innings over Armstrong-Ringsted, and the second ranked Emmetsburg EHawks suffered their first loss, going down 2-0 against LeMars.
