(Milford)– There’s one group of volunteers with Milford RAGBRAI who’s job will be to make sure participants have safe pavement to ride on.
Drew Mills of the Okoboji Cyclist in Milford is heading up the Ride Right Committee. He tells KUOO news his group will ride the route headed out of Milford well in advance of RAGBRAI itself to inspect the route. Mills says the inspection rides will be held between May 31st and June 7th, with RAGBRAI officials present for the route inspection in early June…
“We’ll be putting together a couple of rides before RAGBRAI officials will be there just to kind of get ahead of the game. We’ll mark some spots out that we may miss. You know the more times you ride it the more times you may see you missed before. We want to make sure it’s as safe as possible. We’ll be inspecting any railroad crossings, intersections, any cracks in the road, shoulders, everything like that, marking them. That way there’s no point, hopefully we try to catch everything, try to make it as safe as possible.”
Mills says the fact his volunteers, who are avid bike enthusiasts themselves, have already ridden that route even in advance of the inspections, gives them a jumpstart…
“We ride that route, it’s a very similar route to some of the rides we route on a weekly basis. So some of this stuff we’ll already know, some of this stuff we’ll see along the way. It is slightly different so we’ll kind of do a little bit of a detour and see exactly what the exact route says but we’re pretty familiar with these roads already and so we’re getting some of our riders that are already familiar with riding with and already familiar with the area out there ahead of time and get some stuff pre-noted. That way we’re just that much further ahead of things.”
