(Sioux City)– A man who entered the United States illegally from Mexico was sentenced Wednesday to 20 months in prison. 39-year-old Rafael Martinez De Escobar-Hernandez pled guilty December 9th of last year to one count of illegal re-entry.

At the plea hearing, De Escobar-Hernandez admitted he had illegally entered the U.S from Guatemala after being deported in 2019. On February 24th, 2024, De Escobar-Hernandez was arrested in Buena Vista county on drug charges.

On September 30th, 2024, Iowa Probation contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials regarding De Escobar-Hernandez who had been placed on probation after being arrested on a cocaine charge. ICE officials determined De Escobar-Hernandez is a citizen of Mexico and had been previously removed from the U.S three different times.
