The Spirit Lake girls basketball team was tied, 18-18, last night at halftime against Spencer, but the Indians outscored the Tigers, 25-7, in the third quarter, and went on to beat the Tigers, 53-37.
KJ Veldman led Spirit Lake with 27 points, 18 of those came in the decisive third quarter. The Indians finish the regular season with an overall record of 13-8, and 9-5 in the Lakes Conference.
They’ll open their post-season Saturday, at home against Sheldon, in round one of Class 2A Regionals.
Okoboji won a close girls game at Sibley-Ocheyedan Tuesday night in Siouxland Conference girls basketball. The Pioneers battled through foul trouble to earn a 52-45 victory. Freshman Megan Peschong led Okoboji with 13 points while freshman Shaelyn Adams had 10. Okoboji finishes the regular season at 15-6 (12-6 Siouxland) and will host the winner of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Sioux Central on Tuesday in regional basketball play. Sibley-Ocheyedan junior Bridget Doeden led all scorers with 16. Junior Kayla Ackerman had 13 for S-O. The Generals wrap up their regular season with a 9-12 (8-10 Siouxland) record. They host Boyden-Hull in regional play on Saturday.
The HMS girls fell to South O’Brien, 64-57, last night. The Western Christian Girls beat Estherville-Lincoln Central, 59-46. Clay Central-Everly topped Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire, 50-32.
The Spirit Lake boys fell to Spencer, 54-51. The Indians trailed, 52-48, in the final minute of the fourth quarter, when Trevor Smith knocked down a three-pointer from the right side to cut the Tigers’ lead to one. Matt Finnern then hit two free-throws to give Spencer a three-point lead with 7.4 seconds remaining, and Spirit Lake was unable to get off a clean shot attempt to tie it at the buzzer.
The Indians finish their season with an overall record of 15-6, and 7-7 in the Lakes Conference. They are home against North Union, next Monday, in round one of Class 2A regionals.
Okoboji built a 12 point lead early into the fourth quarter and needed all of it to hold on to a 53-47 road victory over Sibley-Ocheyedan on Tuesday night. The Pioneers had three players in double figures. Senior Keaton Jones had 14. Senior Weston Burgeson had 13, while senior Dalton Syverson had 11. The Pioneers are 4-16 (4-13 Siouxland) and host Sioux Center on Friday. The Generals, now 1-19 (0-17 Siouxland) also had three players in double figures. Junior Devin Vander Veen had 11, while juniors Grant Juber and Ty Hanna each had 10. The Generals travel to George-Little Rock on Friday.
The Harris-Lake Park boys beat Southwest United, 76-37. They’re now 19-1 overall, and wrap up the regular season, Thursday, on the road against Spencer. Hear that contest on Q102 around 7:45pm.
Emmetsburg finished their conference season on the road at Cherokee. The Emmetsburg girls lost 39-29. They were led by Alexa Naig with 11 points and finish the conference season at 2-12. They will wrap up the regular season at Manson on Thursday. The Emmetsburg boys got their first win of the conference season with a 60-50 win over the Braves. The E’hawks got half of their points from senior Jake Jackson as he scored 30 in his final conference game. Emmetsburg is now 4-16 and 1-13 in the conference.
The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys were beaten by South O’Brien, 43-35. Western Christian downed Estherville-Lincoln Central, 81-47.
