Yesterday was college football signing day, across the
country, and also here locally. Ten
senior members of the state champion Spirit
Lake football team gathered at the Sami Center,
yesterday morning, along with coaches, family, and friends, as they each signed
letters of intent to play collegiately, next year and beyond.
Indians’ football coach Josh Bolluyt said he was proud of
this class of seniors, and that it was big day for them and for the Spirit Lake
football program. He said it was a
stressful, yet exciting, time for all parties involved, and he was proud of the
way everyone handled it.
Three seniors committed to play at Northwestern
College, in Orange City. They were Nick Amundson, who will play
defensive back for the Red Raiders; Rick Maris, who will play linebacker, and
Casey Spaeth, who will play wide receiver.
Amundson may find himself covering Spirit
Lake teammate Andrew Ites, who signed
to play wide receiver at Morningside College, in Sioux
City. The
Mustangs were the NAIA runners-up, this past fall.
Three Spirit Lake seniors signed to play for Iowa Western
Community College,
including Cody Poock. He’ll play
linebacker for the Reivers, who were the NJCAA national champions, last
fall. Cody Norton will join Poock, in Council Bluffs, as a
defensive tackle. Tyler Petersen will
play linebacker.
Brett Cochran-Bray, who Bolluyt called “the best kicker in
the state of Iowa,” has signed to kick for Winona State,
in Winona, Minnesota.
Bryson McCabe committed to South Dakota State
University, in Brookings,
where he’ll play defensive back.
Paul Brown will walk-on, as a defensive back, at the University of Iowa.
The Hawkeyes signed 24 scholarship recruits, yesterday,
including two quarterbacks, three wide receivers, two running backs, and four
defensive backs.
The Iowa State Cyclones signed 25 scholarship recruits,
including one quarterback, two running backs, two tight ends, and four
linebackers.
Northern Iowa signed 23 recruits.
