The 2013 Northwest Iowa Lakes I-Club Spring Banquet came to The Roof Garden in Arnolds Park on Thursday. Over 300 hawkeye fans were attendance for this event. Many Iowa coaches and staff were in attendance to talk about the University of Iowa and also there to mingle with the fans from NW Iowa. The headlining speaker was football coach Kirk Ferentz. He shared his thoughts with Scott Nolte about the Big 10, the QB race and the walk on program at Iowa.
Also speaking was Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach Kirk Speraw. The excitement is back with men’s hoops and the upcoming season should be a fun one.

In other hawkeye news, legendary Voice of the Hawkeyes, Jim Zabel passed away at the age of 91 on Thursday. He would have celebrated his 92nd birthday on Monday. He was an American radio and television broadcaster best known for serving as the play-by-play announcer for Iowa Hawkeye football games for 49 years. Zabel joined WHO as the sports director in 1944. Zabel was a live presence for a half-century of sporting events in Iowa, including the Drake Relays for which he provided radio commentary for many years. It has been estimated that he provided commentary for more than 6,100 sporting events. He was named to the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. Zabel was succeeded by Gary Dolphin as the play-by-play announcer for network broadcasts of Iowa Hawkeye football games.
