SL Council Authorizes Grant Application To Assist In Trail Relocation Project

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)—Plans to rebuild a portion of 15th Street in Spirit Lake have the city and the Dickinson County Trails Board talking about a proposal to relocate a recreational trail that runs along a portion of the street. Jean Martin of the Dickinson County Trails Board presented the city with a proposal to relocate that stretch of the trail to abandoned railroad right-of-way that runs through the same area…(click here for comment.)

“This would be the very first section running in an arc through this industrial area of the railroad right-of-way and the plan is to plant 56 trees so that it has some beauty in a kind of bland area right now.”

Martin added the Trails Board has applied for $75,000 in funding through the state’s REAP program. The city’s share of matching funds would be $32,440. The council voted in favor last (Tues.) evening of authorizing the grant application. Martin says they should know in mid-September whether or not they’ll be awarded the grant.

The council also Tuesday approved the relocation of a civil defense siren. The agreement with Dickinson county calls for the siren to be replaced with a new one, which will be moved to a location adjacent to the county’s communications tower on 19th Street.
