Okoboji Basketball Splits With MOC/FV

Girls Game
Okoboji won their second straight game with a 63-42 win in Milford over MOC-FV on Tuesday night. The Dutch would jump to a 5-0 lead and lead most of the first quarter before Okoboji took their first lead of the game at 14-12 on driving layup by Olivia Lorenzen, and the Pioneers would extend that lead to 16-12 at the end of the first quarter with a Montana Wilson lay-up. In the second quarter Okoboji would remain hot and push their lead to 22-12 on a 3-pointer by Lynnae Abrahamson before MOC-FV answered with six straight points, which would be the closest the Dutch would be the rest of the game as the Pioneers went on a 14-6 run fueled by a 3-pointer by Ella Stoll to end the half and take a 36-22 lead. The third quarter was played fairly evenly as Okoboji added four to their margin to push ahead 50-32 entering the final frame. The Pioneers would control the fourth quarter and cruise to the 21 point victory. Montana Wilson had a monster game for Okoboji with 22 points and 20 rebounds; Ava Packebush had a great all-around game with 9 points, 6 steals and 3 assists; Ella Stoll added 9 points and Tara Pas chipped in with 6 points. Madison Pottebaum led MOC-FV with 10 points. Okoboji improves to 8-6 on the season while the Dutch fall to 4-9. Okoboji will now play two straight ranked opponents this weekend, travelling to play Class 2A #6 Sibley-Ocheyedan on Friday while hosting Class 3A #4 Estherville-Lincoln Central.

Comments From Okoboji Coach John Adams
“Wow, what can you say about Montana Wilson and what she did tonight with 22 points and 20 rebounds, she was amazing! She also blocked 3 shots and changed a lot more; just an amazing night by her, and as well as she plays on the court, she’s an even better leader and person off the court. Ella and Ava also had very solid nights offensively, and our guards continue to dictate our disruptiveness on defense, which really sets the tone for us. Makenna Helmers, Olivia Lorenzen, Carly Carstens, Tara, Ava and Lydia Bunde all did a great job of pressuring the ball and creating turnovers. It was really a solid team win and was great to see our kids respond with a sense of urgency after we challenged them in practice the other day to come out and play with a chip on their shoulder.”

Boys Game
The Dutch traveled to Milford Tuesday night for a rematch against the Okoboji Pioneers. Okoboji jumped out to a 14-9 lead at the end of the first. The Dutch responded with a 25-21 lead going into the half. Okoboji regained a 39-38 lead going into the fourth. The fourth quarter ended in a 62-62 tie. The first overtime ended in a 67-67 tie, and the Dutch won the game in double overtime 80-77. The Pioneers were led by Lucas Lorenzen’s 53 points. Kaleb Peschong also added 10. The Dutch were led by Jesse Van Kalsbeek’s 33 points. Carter Aalbers added 19 and Luke Korver 14.

Comments From Okoboji Coach Ryan Stumbo
Overall, we thought we showed good heart and composure tonight through all the intense moments of the game. We played incredibly hard and had several opportunities to come out with the win, and as a coach, that is all you can ask for. Lucas Lorenzen absolutely poured himself into the game tonight and deserves a tremendous amount of credit. MOC-FV deserves a lot of credit too. They responded to our runs and hit a lot of outside shots tonight. Hard-fought losses are never fun as a competitor, but it is these types of games that make you better as a team down the road if you know how to handle them right. We are looking forward to responding moving forward.
