The girls softball season began Monday for many area teams. Spirit Lake played host to West Bend-Mallard in their first game of the year and came away with a lopsided victory. The Indians won 11-1 in five innings, highlighted by an Emily Mercer two-run double. Spirit Lake will pick right up again tonight when they welcome in the rival Pioneers of Okoboji, and you will can catch that game live on Campus Radio KUOO and online at ExploreOkoboji.com. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn hit the road to play Clay Central-Everly in the first game of the summer, and Kayla Orthmann led the way in a 10-0 victory in five innings for the Hawks. Orthmann threw a one hitter, striking out ten batters for the win. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.
Spencer opened their season against Sheldon, but the Tigers committed four errors in the seventh inning, leading to five Sheldon runs and a 6-1 loss in Spencer. For the game, the Tigers had ten errors as a team.
