Indians Rally Past Pioneers, Okoboji Baseball Loses Opener

Spirit Lake improved to 2-0 on the young softball season with a high scoring 14-11 defeat of rival Okoboji Tuesday night in Spirit Lake. The Indians and Pioneers went through five ties and five lead changes before Spirit Lake used a four-run fifth inning to pull ahead for good. Cara Vale struck out eight en route to her second straight win, while McKenzie Peschong took the loss in the Pioneers first game of the season. She struck out five and walked six. Vale also did the job at the plate, going 3-for-3, with four RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Emily Mercer pounded out two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Lead off hitter Amanda Bueltel score three times. The Pioneers were led by catcher Hanna Hawkins, who reached safely in all five plate appearances. She registered two hits, three RBI and three runs scored. Makenzie Anderson also drove in three with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate.

In baseball action, Okoboji fell 5-1 to Laurens. Zach Jones went 1-for-3 and scored the lone run for the Pioneers, while Tate Hanson took the loss after pitching five innings and allowing four earned runs on seven hits.
