After the first 18 holes of competition at the Iowa girls state golf championships, Spirit Lake and Emmetsburg are both still in the hunt for a state crown. The Indians shot a 382 team total in the Class 3A meet, tying them for fourth, and leaving Spirit Lake 16 shots back. Senior Ashley Nielsen paced the opening day for the Indians, with an 88. That ties her for 14th individually. Maureen Owens was a shot behind with an 89. The Ehawks sit nine strokes off the pace in Class 2A, following an opening round 392 team total, good for third place. Jenna Hoch’s 93 and Megan Meyers’ 95 paced Emmetsburg, and places both in the top-20 individually. The second and final round of the state meets will take place today.
