2010 State Wrestling Rundown: Day Three

Class 1A quarterfinal and consolation brackets got going early on Friday at the 2010 Iowa State Wrestling Championships in Des Moines. For Okoboji, 135-pounder Tanner Taylor suffered an injury forfeit in his quarterfinal contest while Zach Jones lost in overtime 10-8 at 160 lbs. Both wrestlers suffer elimination from the tourmanent.

Heavyweight Dustin Schwaller, after a 7-2 win over Darin Adam of Pekin, dropped a 3-2 decision to Brandon TerWee of West Lyon on Friday evening and will take on Adam Steger of Maquoketa Delhi Valley for 7th place on Saturday.

Doug Schwaller was the only Pioneer alive on the front bracket until falling to Jon Meyers of Coon-Rapids Bayard 8-2 in the quarterfinals. Schwaller went on to defeat Lisbon’s Mitch Montgomery and will finish in the top three. He’ll battle Al Horstman of West Hancock for third on Saturday.

For Graettinger-Terril, Michael Jensen is headed to the finals in 145 lbs. After a pinfall over Colby Grothoff of South Hardin, his final four opponent, Clay Welter of Don Bosco, suffered an injury forfeit, sending Jensen to the championshiop. His opponent for Saturday night is Justin Hoffman of East Buchanan Winthrop.

In a rematch of the regional team duals, 189-pounder Nate Howard fell to Eagle Grove’s Bryce Olson 7-2. Howard would win a wrestleback, defeating I-35’s Ethan Calvert, then beating Lynville-Sully’s Kyle Soderblom. Howard will finish with top four honors and he’ll battle for third place with Andrew Noodtvedt of Central Springs in a rematch of the opening round. Howard won that match 3-1 in overtime.

For Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, Heath Nagel (103), Nick Drenth (112), and Josh Treybal (215) all dropped their quarterfinal matches but all won their wrestlebacks to move to the consolation quarters. Matt Finch at 140 defeated Carter Oliver of Woodbine 18-2 to move to the semifinals. There, Finch dropped a 7-6 match to Robert Walker of Martensdale St. Mary’s in the semifinals. Finch will take on Dallas Hutchins of I-35 for 3rd place. Nagel fell to Lance Maguire of St. Edmond Fort Dodge 6-2. Nagel will go for 7th place against Belle Plain’s Zach Bukk. Drenth won 9-5 over Taylor Hagen of Martensdale to move to the 5th place match against Trevor Riste of Panorama Panora. And Treybal in 215 was defeated by Mitch Montgomery. Treybal will wrestle for 7th against Saint Ansgar’s Ian Halliday.

In the third round of the Class 2A consolation bracket, Doug Miner, 103-pounder and lone Spirit Lake Park representative was defeated by Pryce Creigthon of Dallas Center-Grimes 4-2. Miner will still place in the top eight. He’ll wrestle Saturday afternoon for 7th place against Patrick Rooney of Bondurant Farrar.

For Emmetsburg, Skyler Rice (135) fell 8-4 to Wilton’s Kyle Paulsen, the E’Hawk junior enters the consolation semifinals and will finish top six. Joe Naig (160) was defeated by Columbus Catholic Waterloo’s Will Hansen. Naig will wrestle for 7th place against Kyle Lux of South Tama County. Jacob Morris (189) pinned his opponent in three minutes. He advances to the consolation semifinals, he’ll fight for top six honors against Sam Upah of East Marshall/GMG.
