Indians, Pioneers Notch Playoff Wins, Will Meet Tuesday Night (Baseball)

Two Lakes Area baseball rivals will get the chance to do battle in the postseason following opening round wins in the 2010 Class 2A Districts on Saturday night. Spirit Lake defeated Estherville-Lincoln Central by a 7-1 final behind a three-hitter from righthander Mitch Peschon. Spirit Lake jumped out early, scoring four runs in the first inning. Peschon and Paul Brown each had two RBI. The Midgets were led by Joe Clay and Tyler Lutz, who each had doubles. Jeremy Hunt took the loss as ELC’s season ends with a 10-15 record. The Indians move on to play Okoboji, following the Pioneers 6-3 win over Emmetsburg. Ray Zalabowski recorded 16 strikeouts, while the EHawks Ryan Kleigl took the loss and Emmetsburg finished their season at 1-23. Okoboji scored twice in the second and had a 5-0 lead after five innings. The Indians and Pioneers will play their district semifinal game Tuesday in Estherville. In other baseball action over the weekend, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn advanced to the semifinals as well, defeating Sibley-Ocheyedan 15-3 in five innings. The Hawks will play Tuesday night in Sheldon against the host Orabs, who knocked off Western Christian 4-1.
