Several area teams secured spots in the second round of the 2010 Class 2A girls state softball tournament with wins Thursday night. Spirit Lake scored four runs in the first inning to assert their control in a 9-2 win over Sibley-Ocheyedan. Cara Vale hurled seven innings for the win. Offensively the sophomore drove in three, while Paige Krause registered three RBI and two runs scored. Senior Caila Jones was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and crossed home two times. The Generals season ends with a 6-17 record. The Indians advance to play Sheldon, who snuck past George-Little Rock/Central Lyon 11-10. That game will be played tonight in Spirit Lake and can be heard on Campus Radio KUOO beginning at 6:45pm.
The big storyline in Okoboji’s round one win over South O’Brien was the play of Maggie Rohlk. The junior hit two grand slams and another solo home run in the 13-0 six inning win. Bryanna Wittrock also hit a home run, and Keely Bracelin was a perfect 4-for-4 on a night the she was also the winning pitcher for the Pioneers, who advance to play Estherville-Lincoln Central. The Midgets ended Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s season with a 10-1 win in Hartley. The Hawks finish 2010 with a 13-19 record. Okoboji and ELC will play this evening in Milford. Second-ranked Emmetsburg made easy work of Sioux Central with an 11-0 shutout victory in their opening round matchup. Maddison Woodruff struck out 14 in a no-hitter, while every batter in the EHawks lineup notched at least one base hit. Emmetsburg will host Cherokee tonight on Y100 beginning at 6:45pm.
