A twelve-inning marathon between Spirit Lake and Sheldon ended with Emily Mercer racing in from third on a wild pitch to give the Indians a 5-4 win last night and a trip to the semifinals of the Class 2A Regionals. The Orabs got to Spirit Lake’s Cara Vale for four runs in the first; however, the sophomore hung tough and held Sheldon scoreless over the next eleven innings for the win. Spirit Lake rallied in the bottom of the seventh to score three runs and force the extra innings. Mercer finished with two RBI and a run scored, while Paige Krause was 2-for-4 with two driven in. The Indians next opponent will be the Midgets of Estherville-Lincoln Central, who dispatched Okoboji by a 4-0 final. Kendall Bosch limited the Pioneers to just one hit, a double by Kiley Wermersen in the fifth. Keely Bracelin suffered the loss with four runs allowed on six hits. Okoboji’s seasons ends at 22-11. Spirit Lake and ELC will play Monday night in Milford. That game will be broadcast here on Campus Radio KUOO beginning at 6:45pm with the pre-game show.
Also in Class 2A, Emmetsburg improved to 28-3 and advanced to the third round with a 10-0 win over Cherokee in six innings. Star pitcher Maddison Woodruff threw a perfect game with ten strikeouts. She also went 2-for-3 with a RBI at the plate. Kendall Corley pitched in with two runs driven in. The second-ranked EHawks will play Kemper Catholic, who also won 10-0 last night over South Central Calhoun. Monday’s game in Storm Lake can be heard on Y100.
At the Class 1A level, Graettinger-Terril kept their season alive with a 9-5 defeat of Clay Central-Everly in Lake Park. The Knights advance to play Alta on Monday night in Spencer.
Speaking of Spencer, the Tigers open their Class 3A softball postseason this evening in Algona on Y100 beginning at 6:45pm.
