It was heartbreak city for the second-ranked Emmetsburg EHawks softball team Thursday night, as their bid for a third straight trip to the Class 2A state tournament came up short in a 9-8 setback to IKM-Manning in Wall Lake. Emmetsburg led 6-0 after the fourth inning before Wolves rallied to score five runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh. The EHawks pulled to within one in the bottom of the seventh; however, failed to plate another run despite having the bases loaded with just one away. Nichole Hasbrouck went 2-for-3, while Frankie Schmidt registered two RBI. Emmetsburg, which had eight seniors on this years’ squad, finished the season with a 29-4 record.
The baseball playoffs continued in Class 1A last night, and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire went extra innings with Clay Central-Everly before ultimately falling 9-8. The Knights had an 11-10 mark this season.
Class 3A will begin their District tournaments this evening and the Spencer Tigers will open against Denison-Schleswig. The game, which will be played in Storm Lake, begins at 5pm and can be heard on Y100.
