Area Football RoundUp: Indians, EHawks Continue Impressive Starts

In just two weeks of play, the Spirit Lake Indians have already matched their win total from a season ago with Friday night’s 23-0 blanking of Storm Lake. The defense triggered the win right away, as sophomore Rick Maris returned an interception to the 17 yard line, which the Indians turned into the first of two touchdowns by fellow sophomore Cody Poock. The defense would limit the Tornadoes to fewer than 100 yards of total offense and register three INTs. Offensively, the Indians tallied 282 total yards, led by 103 yards and a touchdown from Mitch Peschon. Eight different players carried the ball for Spirit Lake, with Poock gaining 84 yards from scrimmage and Aric Waltz adding 66 yards and a touchdown of his own. The 2-0 Indians will take on Hull Western Christian next Friday.

Down at Albert City, the Okoboji Pioneers fell to 0-2 following a 28-6 setback at Sioux Central. The Pioneers mustered just 183 total yards, compared to 382 for the Rebels. Tate Hanson had 57 total yards from scrimmage, while James Halbur caught three balls for 42 yards. Zach Jones threw for 62 yards in the contest. His counterpart, Brad Ripke, passed for 230 yards and teammate Ethan Lindquist fell a yard short of 100 on the ground. Okoboji takes on Central Lyon/George-Little Rock in week three.

Over in Emmetsburg, the fourth-ranked EHawks earned another W over rival Spencer with a 48-23 final. Emmetsburg gained better than 500 yards on the evening, led by quarterback Cory Schultes 132 yards passing with two touchdowns and 84 yards rushing with two more scores. Spencer committed seven turnovers. The EHawks improve to 2-0 and will play Sioux Central next Friday, while Spencer, at 0-2, takes on Bishop Heelan.

Harris-Lake Park suffered their first loss of the season 44-0 at the hands of Remsen St. Mary’s.
