Spirit Lake-Okoboji Tennis Shines at Spencer Invite

With the tennis postseason right around the corner, the Spirit Lake-Okoboji girls’ tennis team participated in the eight-team Spencer Invitational on Saturday. The Indians would win seven of the nine titles, walking away with the team title with 67 points. Denison-Schleswig was second, ten points back with 57. Spencer finished fourth (41) and Estherville-Lincoln Central wound up seventh (27). Senior Alli Gerking won the #1 singles title, going 3-0 and winning the championship match 6-4. Sophomore KJ Veldman followed suit, taking the #2 singles crown with a perfect 3-0 day and winning the title match 6-2. At #3 singles it was junior Hannah Coenen’s turn to win three straight matches and then the championship by a 6-5 margin. Sophomore Rachel Westergard finished atop the #4 singles bracket with a 6-2 decision in the championship for her third consecutive win on the day. Senior Holly Seemann found her way to the championship match at #5 singles and came away a 6-2 winner. Jamie Kohlhaase nearly made it a perfect sweep through the singles tournament, however, the senior fell 6-2 in the title match at #6 singles. On to doubles where Gerking and fellow senior Aubrey Kolegraff notched three more victories and a 6-2 final in the championship at #1, while Kohlhaase and Coenen did the same for the #3 title, winning the final match 6-3. Veldman and Westergard wound up fifth in the #2 doubles bracket. Despite having already won the Lakes Conference title, SL-O has two more rained out duals to make up before team regionals next weekend.
