Spirit Lakes Pulls Away Late in Win Over Spencer (Softball RoundUp)

A back-and-forth softball battle between Spencer and Spirit Lake ended with a lopsided 16-6 victory in six innings for the Indians on their home field. Spencer held a 3-1 advantage until Spirit Lake put a three-spot on the board to assume their first lead in the third, however, Cassie Galm’s three-run homer in the fifth put the Tigers back up a run. That’s when the Indians blew the game open, scoring eleven runs on eight hits. Paige Krause sparked that surge with her third home run in as many games. Alli Gerking finished a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two driven in. Emily Mercer also drove in a pair with a perfect 4-for-4 effort. Cara Vale struck out five en route to her eleventh win. For the Tigers, Galm ended the night 3-for-3 with three RBI and Cierra Guerrero had three hits with two runs scored and two more driven in. Spencer falls to 1-2 in the Lakes Conference, while Spirit Lake improves to 3-1. They host LeMars on Thursday.

Emmetsburg remained perfect in the Lakes with a narrow 1-0 defeat of LeMars on Wednesday. Faith Schmidt held the Bulldogs to three hits and set 14 batters down via the strikeout. Jayme Penrod drove in the game’s lone run on an RBI base hit, one of just five for the E-Hawks. Emmetsburg is 4-0 in league play and hosts Graettinger-Terril on Thursday.

Keeping pace, as well, in the Lakes Conference is Estherville-Lincoln Central, as the Midgets handled Storm Lake in a 14-4 win.
