Okoboji earned its fifth Siouxland Conference win Friday night with a 6-2 defeat of Sioux Center on the softball diamond. Mikkinzie Peschong limited the Warriors to just one earned run on nine hits and struck out four for the win. Maggie Rohlk went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Mary Eckard was also 3-for-4, scored three runs and drove in another. The Pioneers, at 5-4 in the league and 15-8 overall, will play twice on Saturday with Day Two of the Okoboji Softball Invitational. The Pioneers take on Graettinger-Terril at 9:00am, then battle Harris-Lake Park at noon.
Harris-Lake Park suffered two Cornbelt Conferences losses Friday, as Twin River Valley swept a doubleheader with scores of 15-10 and 9-8. The Wolves are 5-17 this season and 3-9 in conference play. They open the Okoboji Invitational with Sheldon at 9am this morning before taking on the Pioneers at 12pm.
History was made at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn high school on Friday. Head softball coach Dale Orthmann reached milestone victory number 300 with a 6-5 win over West Sioux. Onica Jacobs homered in the contest, her third of the season and in the last two games. The Hawks are 8-11 and will return to play in the Okoboji Invite today against Sibley-Ocheyedan at 9am and then MOC-Floyd Valley at 10:30.
Spirit Lake and a dozen other schools took the fields in Spencer for the Tigers Softball Invitational on Friday. The Indians began the day with an 8-2 loss to Bishop Heelan. Heyley Roberts drove in both runs with a pinch hit single, one of just six hits in the game for Spirit Lake. Paige Krause took the loss. Game two was up against top-ranked Akron-Westfield, and Spirit Lake went down 7-1. The Indians tallied three hits, two by Emily Mercer and one from Krause, who eventually scored the lone run. Carter Hassel gave up three earned runs on five hits and issued eight walks. The Indians are 17-7 with two more games to come on Saturday in Spencer.
The Tigers took a 6-2 loss against Denison-Schleswig, but defeated Central Lyon/George-Little Rock 3-2. Estherville-Lincoln Central went 1-1 with a 6-1 loss to Bishop Heelan and a 9-1 win over Marcus-Meridan-Cleghorn.
