An area high school baseball standout has earned an opportunity to showcase his talents against the rest of Iowa’s top players. Spirit Lake senior Mitch Peschon will play in the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Games next month in Council Bluffs. Peschon is one of 16 players selected to the Small Schools West Squad and is the only one listed as a utility player.
This summer Peschon led the Indians with a .536 batting average, a number that skyrocketed to .641 against Lakes Conference opponents. He also led the team with 44 runs scored, 32 runs driven in, and eight home runs. Peschon was second behind Paul Brown with 40 hits, though he did draw a team-high 26 walks. In 76 official at-bats, Peschon struck out just two times in 2011. The righthander also did damage atop the pitchers mound, accumulating a 7-3 record, a 1.64 ERA, 66 strikeouts, and limited opposing batters to a .169 average.
The selection to this year’s All-Star Game, a first for a Spirit Lake player, is also credited to the career numbers put up by Peschon, a five-year starter on varsity. During that time, he established 28 new single-season and career individual records for both hitting and pitching. Peschon will also leave as the most decorated baseball player in school history, with all-conference and all-district honors, and will take his game to the collegiate level, where he plans to play baseball at Northwestern College in Orange City.
The 35th Annual All-Star Series games will be played August 4th-7th in Council Bluffs.
