Kickoff to the 2011 Spirit Lake football season may be more than a week away, but Monday’s first practice marked a special day for the program. After months of diligent work and fundraising, this year’s squad got its first look at the new SportTurf field it will soon call home. The upgrade to the field and track in Spirit Lake, combined with the overwhelming support from residents and businesses, spurned other additional projects, according to Smith. He says a visitor’s press box will be installed above the bleachers on the fields east side, the high jump pits and shot put rings will be upgraded, and fans will soon get to take advantage of new restrooms and concession stands, the latter of which will be ready for game one this season. To get there though, Smith and the school are asking for volunteers to help with the finishing touches…

Spirit Lake opens the football season on August 19 at home against Cherokee, a game that can be heard live on KUOO Campus Radio. A special tailgate party is also in the plans for that evening.
