Indians, Wolves Move to 3-0, E-Hawks Escape Tigers, HMS Blows Out Braves (Football RoundUp)

The Spirit Lake defense created eight turnovers, including a 75-yard interception returned for a touchdown, and the offense found the end zone in each of its first five possessions leading the Indians to a third consecutive blowout win, this time 55-2 in Storm Lake. Spirit Lake has now outscored its opponents by 134 total points, including a 90-0 differential in the first quarter. Cody Poock amassed 90 yards of total offense with two touchdowns. Bryson McCabe score twice, one being the pick-six on Storm Lake’s fourth possession. Paul Brown threw for 79 yards and a score, while also running one in from 28 yards out. Luke Kabele, Aric Waltz, and Dylan Bryce notched the other touchdowns. Casey Jones, Alex Dau, Waltz, Kevin Martinson, and Casey Spaeth all got their hands on an intercepted pass against Tornadoes quarterback Nic Seaman, who accounted for 122 total yards of offense. Aaron Krier ran for a team-high 99 yards. Storm Lake falls to 1-1 and heads to LeMars next week. Spirit Lake’s “Fastest Show on Turf” will open district play next Friday at Western Christian, which will be broadcast live on KUOO Campus Radio.

Harris-Lake Park fumbled the ball away on the game’s first play, leading to a Remsen St. Mary’s touchdown, however, the Wolves defense would stiffen from there and HLP improved to 3-0 with a 31-6 victory. Quarterback Colin Brons completed 18 passes for 351 yards and five touchdowns. Eli Ihnen caught seven of those passes for 133 yards and a score. Kade Heikens reached the end zone twice on his way to 115 yards receiving. Brady Nissen led the ground attack with 50 yards rushing. The HLP defense forced two turnovers in the game. Next Friday Harris-Lake Park hits the road for district play at West Bend Mallard.

A hard-fought battle between rivals Emmetsburg and Spencer went down to the wire before the E-Hawks squeaked out a 19-13 road win over the Tigers. Emmetsburg ran for 341 yards, led by Andrew Wellik’s 140 yards and two touchdowns. However, the E-Hawks kept Spencer in the game with five fumbles, four deep in Tigers territory. Spencer accumulated just 67 total yards of offense, but did get a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Dakota Baker. The Tigers drop to 1-2 with a road trip to defending state champion Bishop Heelan on the schedule for next week. Emmetsburg will put their 2-0 record on the line at Sioux Central in week three, a game that can be heard live on Y100.

The Hawks of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn notched its first win of the season and handed Cherokee its third lopsided setback with a 51-0 shutout on Friday. HMS will begin district play with their homecoming game against rival Sibley-Ocheyedan next Friday. That game will be featured on Q102.

In other action throughout northwest Iowa, the Generals of Sibley-Ocheyedan defeated West Sioux 18-7. Estherville-Lincoln Central picked up its first win, taking down Algona 14-7. Sheldon rallied past MOC-Floyd Valley 20-11 to stay unbeaten. Sioux Center edged LeMars 27-21. West Lyon rebounded from last week’s setback for a 28-10 victory over Western Christian. Unity Christian handled Woodbury Central 26-6. Clay Central-Everly couldn’t find the scoreboard, dropping a 12-0 ballgame to East Sac County. South O’Brien was ten points better than Ridge View, taking a 17-7 victory. And Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley handed Central Lyon/George-Little Rock loss number one on the season by a 27-13 margin.

Other 8-man football scores include Armstrong-Ringsted extended the state’s longest win streak to 26 games with a 55-6 decision against Laurens-Marathon. Ruthven-Ayrshire knocked off Spalding Catholic 30-20. Graettinger-Terril fell just short against Ventura, losing 44-39. And North Sentral Kossuth lost a weather-shortened game to Norheast Hamilton 58-16. The game was called midway through the third quarter due to inclement weather.
