The Okoboji volleyball team came up just shy of capturing the tournament title Saturday at the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Invitational. The Pioneers went 2-1 in pool play, with wins over Newell-Fonda (21-14, 21-17) and the host Hawks (21-10, 21-7) sandwiched around a loss to South O’Brien (21-19, 21-18). In the tournament portion of the event, Okoboji used a three-set win over Trinity Christian (18-25, 25-14, 15-11) in the semifinals to reach the championship match, where they fell for the second time against South O’Brien (25-22, 25-20). On the day, Mikkinzie Peschong collected team-highs with 21 kills, 16 blocks, 35 digs, and eleven service acces. Sydney Boeckholt notched 46 set assists. The Pioneers return to the court Monday when they host Rock Valley in conference play, a match we’ll have live on Q102 and at www.exporeokoboji.com.
As for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, they finished just 1-2 in pool play, falling to both the Pioneers and eventual champion Wolverines (21-18, 21-13). The Hawks did beat Newell-Fonda in three sets (21-15, 13-21, 15-7).

Graettinger-Terril posted a winless 0-4 mark Saturday at the Alta/Aurelia Invitational. The Knights suffered setbacks against Remsen St. Mary’s (21-14, 6-21, 15-11), Alta/Aurelia (21-13, 21-12), Cherokee (21-10, 21-14) and Clay Central-Everly (21-18, 13-21, 15-4). Statistically, Nikki Brown registered 16 kills, Hailley Nelson dished out 17 set assists, Morgan Mortenson served up seven aces, and three players were tops on the team with 18 digs. G-T returns to Cornbelt Conference play Tuesday with a home match against West Bend-Mallard.
