The top two teams in Class 1A District 2 squared off in Emmetsburg on Friday, and the E-Hawks kept their perfect run in tact with a late 20-13 win over defending state champ West Lyon. Emmetsburg led 12-0 after three quarters of play, but a blocked punt for a touchdown followed by a fumble on the kickoff gave West Lyon a 13-12 advantage midway through the fourth. The second-ranked E-Hawks, though, were able to respond with a 64-yard TD pass from Ryan Kliegl to Justin Studer with 90-seconds remaining for the win. Andrew Wellik rushed for 108 yards and a score as the E-Hawks accumulated twice as many yards on the night as the Wildcats. The victory moves Emmetsburg to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in district games, with West Lyon now holding a 3-1 record in league play and 4-2 on the season. Emmetsburg hosts Sibley-Ocheyedan on Y100 next Friday.
The Generals will enter that contest as part of a four-way tie for third in the district with a 2-2 mark after falling 25-13 at home to South O’Brien, who is also even at 2-2. The other two teams include Sioux Central and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn after the Rebels defeated the Hawks on the road Friday by a 38-14 margin. Sioux Central quarterback Brad Ripke amassed 223 yards of total offense and accounted for four touchdowns. Jacob Clark led HMS with 101 yards rushing and a touchdown, while Logan Rozeboom ran for another 91 yards. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn is now 3-3 overall and will head to Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer in one week.
Harris-Lake Park held a 7-6 advantage over top-ranked and undefeated Armstrong-Ringsted after one quarter, however, the two-time defending state champions in 8-man football pulled away in the second quarter with four touchdowns en route to a lopsided 57-7 win. Tyler Feddersen ran for 159 yards and two scores, while also throwing for 94 yards and a touchdown. Dakota Odermann found the endzone four times as part of a 130 yard night from scrimmage for the Mustangs, who improve their state record winning streak to 30 straight games. Wolves quarterback Colin Brons scored the lone HLP touchdown as he rushed for a team-high 27 yards and was 3-for-16 passing for just 18 yards. Harris-Lake Park drops to 2-2 in district play and 5-2 overall. They travel to rival Graettinger-Terril next week, a game that can be heard live on Q102.
The Knights will be coming off a rough loss, falling 66-6 at undefeated West Bend-Mallard. G-T sits even at 3-3 on the year and 2-2 in league play.
In Class 2A, Sheldon nipped Western Christian 22-21 in a battle between last year’s two district co-champions. Central Lyon/George-Little Rock handled Sioux Center on the road with a 42-12 win, and Unity Christian took down a Estherville-Lincoln Central, 41-28 on the Midgets Homecoming. ELC remains winless in district play. They will host undefeated Spirit Lake on Friday, a game that will be broadcast live on KUOO.
In Class 3A, the Spencer Tigers notched their second win in districts with a 21-13 defeat of Denison-Schleswig. The win pulls the Tigers into a three-way tie for third at 2-2. Elsewhere, third-ranked Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley pounded on Storm Lake, 45-7, Sioux City Bishop Heelan had no problems with Sergeant Bluff-Luton in a 35-7 win, and MOC-Floyd Valley defended their home field with a 35-13 victory over LeMars.
North of the border, Jackson County Central routed Redwood Valley 42-13, Fairmont had little trouble with St. Peter in a 28-7 victory, and Worthington snuck by Benson, 28-26.
