With a backdrop of black and pink in support of breast cancer awareness, the Spirit Lake volleyball team made an impressive statement on the court in a three-set sweep over rival Estherville-Lincoln Central on Tuesday night. The Indians earned a pair of close victories in the opening two sets, 25-23 and 25-21, before pulling away in set three, 25-17, for the match win. Kendra Stokke notched a double-double with a team-high thirteen kills and thirteen digs for Spirit Lake. Bailey Loveall finished with eight kills and three blocks. Senior Whitney Berkland tallied 20 assists. The Midgets were paced by Allie Sievert and Alyssa Johnson, who each hammered home eight kills. ELC sits at 14-9 on the season and 2-3 in league play. Spirit Lake surpasses last season’s win totals, improving to 14-6 overall and 3-2 in the Lakes Conference. They travel to Storm Lake on Thursday.
Elsewhere in the Lakes, Spencer suffered a lopsided defeat at top-ranked and undefeated Western Christian, falling in three-sets, 25-7, 25-10, and 25-9. The Tigers are 1-3 against league opponents.
Harris-Lake Park’s quest for a Cornbelt Conference championship may have taken a huge hit Tuesday at Ventura, as the Wolves fell in four, tight sets, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, and 25-21. Mariah Gath was tops with eight kills and four aces, to go along with eleven digs. Macy Gunderson had a double-double of 24 set assists and 16 digs. HLP now sits at 3-2 in conference matches and 12-14 overall. The Wolves host CWL on Thursday.
Over in the Siouxland Conference, Okoboji hit the road to battle MOC-Floyd Valley, however, the Dutch proved too tough for the Pioneers in a three-set sweep, 25-9, 25-17, and 25-12. Mikkinzie Peschong registered six kills and eleven digs. Sydney Boeckholt had nine assits. Okoboji falls to 0-6 in league play and 12-13 overall. They return home Thursday to host Pink Out Night, along with the Sibley-Ocheyedan Generals. That match will be aired live on Q102.
Also in the Siouxland, Sibley-Ocheyedan fell in three sets to fourth-ranked Boyden-Hull 25-11, 25-10, and 25-13. Sheldon handled West Lyon in three games, 25-10, 25-13, and 25-12, and Sioux Center defeated Rock Valley in straight sets, 25-11, 25-3, and 25-19.
One score from the War Eagle Conference, Sioux Central battled through three close games to sweep South O’Brien, 25-23, 25-9, and 27-25.
North of the border, ninth-ranked Jackson County Central defeated Worthington in a three-set sweep, 25-20, 25-18, and 25-12. Round Lake-Brewster fell on the road in a five-setter, 16-25, 23-25, 25-8, 25-22, and 15-11.
